Are Overwater Bungalows Actually Worth It? (Yes. Mostly.)

You've seen the photos. The blue is unreasonable. The bungalow is on stilts. Someone in a robe is feeding a stingray off a deck. You think, 'I could never.' Reader, you absolutely could. Once. Maybe.

Are they worth it? Honest answer: yes — if you go for the right reason, to the right place, for the right number of nights.

Right reason: a once-in-a-decade trip. Honeymoon, big anniversary, 'we both made it through that year' trip. Not a 'fun weekend' trip. The math doesn't work for a weekend.

Right place: French Polynesia (Bora Bora, Moorea, Tikehau) or the Maldives. Skip the cheaper Caribbean knockoffs. The water doesn't compare. You're paying for the water. The water has to deliver.

Right number of nights: 4 to 5. Two nights and you'll spend the whole time decompressing. A week and you'll get bungalow-stir-crazy by day six. Four to five nights is the goldilocks zone of 'I have read three books, snorkeled four times, and not opened my laptop once.'

What's actually great: waking up to the sound of waves directly under the bed. Stepping into 84-degree water before breakfast. Stars. So many stars. A bathtub you can take a phone call in (don't).

What's overrated: the in-bungalow breakfast canoe. It's beautiful. The coffee is cold. Eat at the restaurant. Save the canoe for the photo.

Booking tip: shoulder season (May or October-ish) cuts the rate by 30-40% and the weather is still mostly perfect. A travel advisor can also stack resort credits, free transfers, and room upgrades that make a 'splurge' meaningfully less splurge-y. That's mostly what I do for a living. Hi.
